SOMETIMES ONE US KNOWS.

Solemon Van der Wyck’s life was slowly degrading as each day the evidence mounted and his depression deepened. The life he’d shared with his wife Jennifer and their three kids seemed to be drifting away from him,

Oh! There was nothing , no place or event, that he could point to with concrete evidence but he was losing those he loved and for whom he’d lay down his life for. He felt, it. The harder he tried to mend the relations between them, the gap seemed to widen.

Months passed as his concerns grew - months that he hurt! As he attended all his kids school functions and tried to assist them with their school work, the more distant they’d become. The love between Solllie and Jen seemed to have grown stale and sex when it occasionally occurred was stale and lacking a loving aspect.

Only his work proved to be a satisfaction to him as Sollie enjoyed major success and financial reward. He would soon be a millionaire! Of course, he felt little joy as he thought of the family he was losing. Soon the house in the gated community would be finished and the family could move there with their own pool, hot tub. And large BBQ set up on the patio behind the 4,000sf home. Perhaps then, He could be reunited with his family.

So it was that the returned home from work at his usual 5:30PM time to find Dinner unprepared. Not really thinking he’d remarked, “Where’ve you been all day.”

The response was totally unexpected as he saw his wife’s face grow ashen and her eyes light up with fear. He’d obviously struck on something he didn’t understand. Then, as she stuttered something about shopping and overstaying her time, Sollie sensed that this was a lie.

Again, not really thinking, he’d responded, “Guess a guy’s expected to just keep his mouth shut and accept the inevitable around here.” Then, having spoken, he instantly regretted the words he’d intended as a joke. The look of concern and fear was evident as she served thei dinner. As they cleaned up the kitchen together, Jen was strangely quiet and distant.

It was after their kids were in bed and Sollie and Jen were alone in their bedroom that his wife spoke, “How long have you known?, she said.

At first Sollie was puzzled. Then, as he began to reason, he realized that he’d stumbled on something and he needed further explanation. Not wishing to expose his thoughts, he replied, “Long enough! I think I need you explanation.”

Now unsure of her situation, Jen inquired, “How much do you know?, hoping to understand just how much she had to reveal to save her marriage.

Recognizing her attempt at directive questioning Sollie replied, “Enough to get out of here and go to a hotel where I can think.” He moved to pack fresh socks and underwear and work clothes as he said, he’d come later for dress clothes. An hour later, he was in a room at a cheap hotel near his workplace.

There, Sollie lay in bed, considering his situation, He actually knew nothing of Jen;s situation - only that there was a situation and she was carefully avoiding talking to him about it. His mind rested on her words, “. . how long have you known?”

He slept, little that night and the next day was a disaster,

It was the following morning when Sollie received the telephone call from his angry wife. She spoke carefully, “When are you coming home. I’m getting tired of caring for these kids by myself.” Suddenly, Sollie was pissed! Hev replied, “When you’re ready to talk to tell me exactly what is going on in your life. Maybe never.” With that, he closed the connection and returned to his work. A few minutes later, Jen called again and Sollie listened as she said, “We can’t go on like this. The kids are asking questions! How about coffee tomorrow, mid morning at the IHOP on Jergins Street.”

It was10:00 PM when Solliem set foot in Jergins IHOP and saw Jen sitting at a booth in the rear. He went to sit across from her as the atmosphere was decidedly cool. “Morning Jen. I’m here, So what do you want to talk about?”, he asked. Her response was equally cool as she said, “Us! You and me and our kids and our families. I think we need to work this out between us.”

“So tell me what I need to work out. I’m tired of playing games.”

“How much do you know already?” She inquired again as she attempted to determine how much Sollie already knew. Again, he replied, “Jen, I’m tired, of playing games. I love you and the family and I always will but you’re right. This can’t go on.”

As he spoke, he saw real fright in here eyes and fear in her person. “Are you saying that you’re leaving me and the family, You can’t do that I’ll get half of everything that you own in a divorce action.” When Sollie, smiled, Jen felt some terrible omen and her fear showed even more.

Sollie said, “You can sue away all you want but you see, in anticipation of just such an event, the portfolio we both jointly owned has been placed in a trust account in our kids names and mamaged by me. My company is a corporation and no longer belongs to me. The stock in the company is in the kids trust account. Essentially, I own nothing and live on a salary of $1,500 per month. With that, Sollie arose and left the IHOP for the friendly looking bar next door.

There, as he sat, Jen had followed a few steps behind. As she settled in beside him Jen was both angry and concerned. She spoke, “Alright! I’ve been meaning to tell you anyway, I met a teacher at he school where I tesch and the kids are enrolled and we’ve gown close. He’s fun and exciting and he touches me in ways you never did. I don’t love him. . . sometimes I don’t even like him much. He’s just fun and games and means nothing to me. I love only you and my family. It’ll be over in a few weeks.”

In reply, Sollie spoke sternly, “Something’s over right now. Either your affair or our marriage is ended. Make up your mind.”

A long silence developed as Jen was clearly agitated by the ultimatum. As she fumed and attempted to formulate a reply, Sollie spoke again, “You’ve got one minute to make up your mind. After that minute, I’ll just assume that you’ve decided on divorce.

At this, Jen replied, “Why should I be interested in you? You’ve made yourself a poor man unable to support a family? Sollie paid his the bill and walked out of the restaurant. It was as he reached his car that his wife caught him again and said, “All right! You win! I’ll call Juan and tell him our relationship is over. Now, come home and tend to your family.”

Sollie considered her sudden change of attitude as he hesitated to respond. There was no loving reunion between them as the atmosphere remained hostile. He felt the lack of trust that made their marriage work. He thought, perhaps it’s be better if he took care of some things first. “ This involves a change of plans.” he said.

There was no loving gesture as they parted. He just walked away with no good byes or closing sentiment. He’d made a quick trip to Radio Shack and purchased his iivestgaive tools.

Then, there was a return home where he installed the new decorative button on her purse and installed a tracking device on her automobile as Jen prepared dinner.. By dinner time, his computer could track her movements and hear her telephone conversations, Then, he sought his kids to help them with their school work. In the two hours since he’ returned home,
Jen hadn’t even spoken ro him! It was after dinner that Sollie went to Jan and said, “Perhaps things are too fresh in my mind but ‘ve got to have some space to think.” With that he went to his old office room and checked his telephone.

Shorftly, just Jen had promised. He heard her speak to John on her telephone as he heard her say, “Sollie knows about us. He says I must end our relationship,” Then, over John’s objections she’d softened as she said, “Maybe after Sollie’s back with the family again we can take up where we left off.” As the conversation continued, Jen made it clear that she loved her husband and kids and wanted a full life with them as she talked of fun and excitement with her lover.” Sopllie’s course of action was now clear.

As, over the next two weeks, he maintained communications at home. He hired a private investigator. He kept a constant watch on his computer. By Thursday night he had sufficient evidence, including pictures to support his divorce. With the information, he made three copies of his evidence and mailed one copy to the school board that employer both Jen and John. The second copy he mailed to John Boener’s wife and the third he dropped in the mail box of his old home.

Friday, he went to work feeling relaxed and relieved. He quickly immersed himself in his work.

It was near qutting time when Jen, his wife, came into his office teary eyed and clearly repentant. As she approached Sollie, she said simply, “I’m sorry! I’ve ruined a whole bunch of lives and I’ve been fired from my job. My teaching career is over and you’ve gotten your revenge. Neither John or I will ever be allowed in the classroom with kids again. I should hate you but now I understand, You deserve better. The house andc the kids are yours and I only hope that someday you’ll forgive what I did to you.”

Sollie sensed something different, , ,that she was truly repentent. He looked into her eyes.

Sollie was looking at his old wife. The one that he had loved and was now suffering. What could he possibly have been thinking to have taken his revenge out on her? His course of action was again clear.

Suddenly Sollie spoke, “Let’s go get the kids and go to a fast food place for dinner. I’m starved.”
