The Affair Continues, Part 4

(Part 8 from 10)
When the nurse came in, Teri was taken aback at what she had told her. The doctor wants to do a blood test on you, Teri. It’s a short one that we can do here in the office. It might not mean any thing at all, but he just wants to be sure.

“Why, what did he find?” Teri’s head began to pound. She was a little unnerved by this turn of events.

“Your uterus was slightly enlarged and the doctor just wanted to be sure there wasn’t a problem.” The nurse told her clinically.

As Teri sat in the waiting room after the test, her head began to pound more. It seemed like forever since she had the blood drawn. What could be taking so long? What did he find that he wanted to be sure of? How was she going to tell her husband? What about her boys?

Finally, the nurse who drew her blood came out smiling, and told her that the doctor was waiting to see her in his office. Teri wanted to know why she was smiling and why the doctor had asked to see her. She wanted to know what happened with her blood test. The nurse said that she had to wait for the doctor.

“Hi, Teri.” The doctor said, “Have a seat.”

“Doctor, what is going on? The nurse said my uterus was slightly enlarged. What’s wrong with me? Am I going to be alright?”

The doctor put a hand up to silence Teri. He could tell she was unnerved and that her mind was going 90 miles per minute.

“First of, Teri, I want to tell you that you are going to be just fine.”

Teri sighed a sigh of relief.

“Second, Teri, I want to congratulate you. You are going to have a baby. It looks like you are a little over 3 weeks pregnant.”

Teri couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “But how?”

“Teri, this is your third one. If you have to ask how…”

Teri smiled and wouldn’t let him finish. “What I mean is, I’ve been on the pill since my youngest son was born almost 6 years ago. I haven’t faltered on the medication. I have always been right on time with them taking them with my breakfast.”

He asked if she had been sick recently and on any antibiotics. No. He asked about home and school, if she had been under a great amount of stress or strain lately.

Teri thought about it. “No, no more than usual.”

The doctor couldn’t explain it, but reminded her that the pill wasn’t one hundred percent foolproof. “Sometimes these things happen. Call it a miracle, if you will.”

“I had suspected it when I checked your uterus, but I had to be sure before I told you the good news.”

The doctor instructed her to immediately stop taking her birth control pills and gave her some prenatal vitamins. Then he instructed her to see her OB/GYN as soon as possible. He figured though that she would be due in the summer, probably the beginning of July.

Teri left the doctor’s office ecstatic. She was thrilled to be pregnant again and she knew Bill would be too. The boys had been asking her for some time to have another child. It was perfect.

As she drove home, reality set in. A little over three weeks. She thought back and realized that it was around her anniversary weekend. Oh, No! She suddenly panicked and was mortified to think it might be possible that the baby wasn’t Bill’s.

Her whole body shook and she felt sick once more. How was she ever going to explain it to her Bill? She suddenly felt very confined and gasped for air.

She had to stop, had to pull over. She pulled over in a little park’s parking lot and got out. She was practically hyperventilating. She’s a married schoolteacher. She couldn’t be going around having another man’s baby. How was she ever going to be rid of Clark now?

Tears filled her eyes. She brought her hands up over her head, crossed her arms and brought her hands back down hanging on to the back of her head. Her head was screaming in pain now.

She had to think, but she couldn’t her head hurt so bad. She walked over to a park bench nearly stumbling as she swayed dizzily. She sat down and dropped her head down. Breathe! She told her self. Calm down and breathe!

She began to relax a little.

She got back up and swung her arms out in front of her and then pulled them back. She could really feel the tension in her shoulders and back now!

She paced back and forth with her hands on her hips. Over and over she played the events of that night in her head.

She came to the bench. She sat back down. Then she got back up again and paced. This time, she clasped her hands behind her back. She sat back down. She repeated this process of pacing and then sitting a few more times, and then it came to her. Bill had been the one to first spill his seeds inside of her that weekend. He did it twice and the sex had been so good so intense, she must have gotten pregnant then. The duress of the affair and the strain she had already felt in her marriage before the affair, must have caused the pill to be ineffective and then she was fertile.

All right, she told herself that must be what happened. She had to believe that because the alternative was a fate worse than death or so she thought.

Teri clasped her tummy and smiled at the thought of carrying new life inside of her.
