Driving home on a rainy day

(Part 1 from 2)

The weather was quite bad, the rain poured down so heavily that I could see maybe only the six cars ahead of me. The rain had caused everyone to slow down and I was moving at around 20mph. The slow traffic in a way made it safer for everyone, though I did want to get home sooner. I turned on the radio and learned that the thunderstorm would continue on through the night until the next morning. At times like this I wish I had opted to buy a condo in the city instead of the spacious house out in the suburbs. I would never have to worry about driving as I could easily get home taking a bus or the subway. I continued to drive at the same slow pace for the next twenty minutes and then from a distance I saw two figures on the side of the road.

As I came closer, they started to resemble people. I thought well maybe their car broke down or something. But just as I went past them I realize that something was wrong. Even through the heavy rain I could tell that they were young girls, probably not even eighteen. How is it that no one picked them up? And worst of all they weren't even sticking out a hand hoping someone might pick them up. Maybe people were just too reluctant to pick up hitchhikers fearing for their own safety. Yes they could potentially pull a gun and take the car. But they couldn't speed off, not in such weather. And who in the right mind would try such a scheme in such weather. I was in the lane furthest to the right and since the traffic was going so slow, I could easily pull pack onto the freeway with relative ease. I turned down the power window on the passenger side.

"Hey are you okay? Do you need a ride?"

To my relief, they immediately went onto my car.

"Thank you, we've been walking since Exit 45."

My god, they've been walking for nearly ten miles, in this kind of weather. What had happened to them? Looking at them again, I could definitely say that neither of them was past eighteen. Where were their parents? Where did they live? Well I might as well ask them.

"Are you two okay? Where do you need to go?"

"We don't have any place to go?"

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Our father was shot to death today. The landlord also put out an eviction notice two weeks ago because we missed rent for three months."

"Why didn't you call the police?" And after asking that I felt heartless and cold.

One of them immediately replied, "It's not like they could do anything for us. Our dad came home drunk all the time and beat us up, the cops never did a thing."

"Alrite, I'll drive you to my house first and we'll discuss what we can do."

I drove for another half hour before getting home.

"Okay, why don't you just sit over in the living room and relax for a bit. I'll tidy up the guestroom a bit and bring you some towels."

I went to the guestroom, took the stuff off the double bed, and grabbed two towels from the closet. I did not have any women's clothing, so I just grabbed two unused Fruit of the Loom boxer shorts and t-shirts that I recently bought in a pack that was on sale at Wal-Mart.

"Hey why don't you guys take a shower first. I'll cook something fast and you'll have something to eat after."

"Thank you. I'm Evelyn, this is my little sister Jewel."

I reached to shake their hands. "I'm Ben."

Evelyn used the washroom in my bedroom and Jewel used the one next to the guestroom.

I pulled some ground beef and meat balls from the freezer and a jar of spaghetti sauce in the fridge. I boiled a pot of water and dumped some spaghetti and the ground beef into it. That was the best meal that could be made in ten minutes.

Evelyn came out first and was noticeably more energized. She had a slight perpetual smile on her face. However, to my shame, it was her figure that caught my attention. My pair of boxer shorts really accentuated her hips. I had wondered if she even had her panties on underneath. And her chest, that was a marvelous sight. I did not intend to give her a white t-shirt, but regardless, her dark nipples were noticeable through the fabric, even though the shirt was a bit loose.

"I'm going to shower. I have some spaghetti cooked. You and Jewel helped yourself."

After I came out of the shower I went into the kitchen to look for them, only to find two empty plates. I went into the living room and found the two of them already figuring out how to operate the TV and was watching American Idol.

"Hey you two."

They turned around and both were visibly happy.

"Hey I'm gonna go grab some food."

"Alrite." Jewel replied

I went into the kitchen to find that the spaghetti in the pot was completely gone. Oh well. I have some microwave dinners in the freezer still. That took three minutes to prepare and I had a meal, though not a very healthy one. I went back into the living room to watch TV with the two. And when I got back, the show was already over and Carrie had won.

"So are you two in school?"

"I graduated just this year and I'm working as a waitress for now and Jewel is going into her final year of high school." Evelyn replied.

"So do you plan on going into college?"

"I did well on the SAT with a 3.2 but that is not good enough to win any scholarships. And because of that I have to come out to work. Jewel is writing her SAT soon and hopefully can do better and get into college. So what is it that you do Ben?"

"I'm not exactly sure now that you mention it. Well I'm by profession an engineer and I work for Cathay Pacific Airways as a technician. But at the same time I'm in their cadet training program to become a pilot."

"Oooh. I've always wanted to work as a flight attendant. Travel around the world. Date the good looking pilots." Jewel replied.

"Well I think you're smart enough to be more than a flight attendant."

The rest of the evening was pleasant and we shared some stories amongst us whilst watching some shows on the TV. It was approaching midnight already, but at the very least I did not have a shift the next day.

"Hey do you guys want to take a tour of the house?"

"Yeah sure!" Jewel replied.

"No objections from me either." Evelyn responded.

"Well my house is quite simple. You've seen pretty much all of the top floor and it really isn't that interesting. I go there just to sleep."

"Really? Just to sleep?" Evelyn remarked, while raising her right eyebrow.

Okay, my mind is just playing tricks with me. The basement was where it's at. I bought the house with the basement unfurnished. I took a month off to renovate it, with the help of a friend. I showed them the designated home theater room. I had a widescreen projector with a 5.1 surround system. It was top notch stuff and it cost me three months worth of salary, the final cost was something close to being twenty thousand. They were quite amazed by it when I popped in my Saving Private Ryan DVD.

I then showed them my little workshop where I had models of airplanes as well as blueprints of certain historical military aircraft that I was interested with. I then showed them the room where I housed my own small winery. I had collected about fifty bottles in there. The prices of the wine ranged between two hundred and thirty.

Evelyn picked out a bottle, it was one of the expensive ones. It was a Vintage 1990 Pavillon Rouge Margaux.

"Can we try this?"

"No, first of all, I've been saving that for a special occasion. And secondly you're not of age."

She immediately jumped back at me,

"You have so many bottles here, and when that special occasion comes, I’m sure you'll still have something good. And secondly, it would not be illegal as long as we're not in a public area."

Thinking about it, she had a point. And with a sigh,

"Alrite let's go upstairs and get some glasses."

I poured three glasses out. And it seemed like they knew what they were doing. Instead of chugging the whole glass they gently spun their glass and took in the aroma before sipping it. It appeared that they were far from ghetto despite their upbringing. After finishing their first glass, they asked for a refill and I gladly obliged. I was not very good at taking alcohol and by the second glass I was already feeling the buzz. I was also less mindful of my own thoughts. I realized that I was staring at Jewel and Evelyn in a more sexual way now. Despite the fact that they were only seventeen and sixteen, their bodies were fully mature. I was also feeling very warm and I knew I probably was as red as a tomato.

It was then when Evelyn asked that question,

"So do you have a girlfriend?"

"No I don't anymore. I broke up with her a year ago. After graduating from university, she decided to move back to Germany where her parents were. I wanted to keep my job here and that’s how it went."

"So you haven't dated anyone for a whole year?" Jewel asked.
