True Friendship 1

(Part 1 from 2)

I felt tired as I reviewed for my test, staring at my book and killing the twenty minutes that was left of class to study. I looked around and saw everyone burying their heads deep within their books, page after page of persistent flipping. I couldn’t concentrate, I looked around once again and noticed how many people were actually sleeping, the teacher was too busy typing away so I might as well do so. Before I could fall deep into my sleep, my teacher was tapping me on the shoulder with his pen,
“This is not a nap time Laura, but I’m sure I can arrange a nap time for you in detention.”
I looked up wearily and narrowed my eyes at him as I sneered when he turned his back, I could hear all the other students snickering.
“Would after school today be okay for you Laura?”

I wanted to give him the finger right at that moment but my mother wouldn’t appreciate detention with an additional suspension. I gave him a small murmur and nodded my head,
“Looks like you’ll be the only one in my detention today, you better bring something to do or you’ll be very bored.”
I shrugged and closed my textbook, and then I saw a pencil fly across the room and hitting the door.
I laughed at that but shut my mouth quick as my bald teacher glared at me,
“Who did that?”
I beautiful brunette waved her hand proudly in the air as a blond next to her whispered,
“Hey…you may be the new girl but I’m sure you knew that getting into trouble is not something to be proud of.”
The brunette gave the blond a ‘whatever’ look on her face and sneered at the teacher,
“Do I get a detention?”

Mr. Jordan stared at Karyn with narrowed eyes,
“No. If that was intentional, which I am very sure it is, you’re not getting a detention. That is your punishment.”
Karyn put down her hand with pouted; yet soft, sensuous pink lips. I shook this thought off; I would do no such thing as to think of falling for another girl. I smiled at her anyway and raised an eyebrow; she made eye contact with me and shrugged. What was she trying to do? Getting to know new people is okay I guess but getting herself into trouble on the first day of school doesn’t seem like what a smart girl like her would do.
That afternoon, as everyone boarded their buses or drove on home, I dragged my feet down the carpeted halls and made my way slowly to my locker. I jadedly yanked my locker door opened and threw the books I had no need for in, I grabbed my jacket and kicked the door recklessly shut. I turned to go in the other direction when I nearly ran over the girl. My face was but inches from the brunette’s from class earlier today.

“Whoa, please don’t do that!”
I exhaled a sigh of relief; I looked into her dark brown eyes and gave a forced laugh,
“So…aren’t you going home?”
She shook her head and smiled at me with that cute little smile she always did,
“Nope. I’m going with you.”
“But you didn’t get a detention…”
“So? I have nothing better to do and I want to get to know you…since I’m new and everything.”
“Why me? Not that I have a problem with this.”
She giggled and turned the corner with me close behind,
“No reason. You seem to be a nice person.”
I didn’t want to argue anymore, I found the room and sat myself down, I watched her sit her perfectly shaped body down beside me.
Mr. Jordan glared at Karyn, then pointed accusingly at her,
“It’s your time, not mine.”
He sat down then thought a moment, then stood and left,
“If you go anywhere, even the restroom, Laura, I will give you another detention.”
I rolled my eyes and let my head drop into my fold arms on the desk.
“I’m Karyn by the way.”
Karyn said as she opened her notebook and began to scribble things down,
“I’m Laura. How are you?”

I replied without enthusiasm, she only happily answered me with an enthusiastic and hyperactive personality. I liked her all right, she seemed to be nice and a good person to hang around with. Five minutes passed while we sat there in silence,
“So…what’s your favorite color?”
Karyn randomly popped,
“Blue. Baby blue.”
“Me too!”
I looked up at her, in her small, entrancing eyes,
“Why?”
“I’m just trying to get to know you!”
Karyn replied happily and looked back down at her notebook,
“Okay.”

I said and sat up, I turned my desk so it was facing her. We talked for the whole hour that we were there in detention; it was not really a detention at all because Mr. Jordan seemed to be having problems with the copy machine next door. We could hear him cursing and kicking the machine of course. We giggled and talked, I haven’t really had a best friend throughout my life but after today, and as the week passed, Karyn and I were inseparable. Each day before school we’d meet at the front door since we rode different buses to school. We would have 45 minutes of free time before advisory began so we always hung out and wander aimlessly throughout the school, talking to each other about what had happened or what was on TV. Our friendship grew as we did, I watched her develop like no other and I believe I grew some too.

A year passed and it was sophomore year in high school, Karyn and I, instead of having fewer classes together, ended up having more classes together. Though we have separate lunches, our times spent together in the four of six classes were greater. We constantly shopped together and talked endlessly on the phone at night, I wondered though, why Karyn never spoke of relationships. I asked her and she replied,
“Oh, because I haven’t been in any. Don’t ask me why, I have perfectly good reasons.”
Karyn said this as happily as ever, like she always does. I never suspected a thing though, and she didn’t either, I didn’t even want to believe it myself.
“Have you been in any?”
She suddenly sprang out of nowhere, I was taken by surprise, I have been hiding and torturing myself in middle school and convincing myself that I was simply jealous. How wrong I was, then I tried convincing myself of other things.

“Yes, a few. They were not serious at all, considering the fact that I was in middle school.”
I laughed it off and looked at Karyn, her eyes were so deep and her cheeks were a bright shade of red. I felt like pulling her body up to mine and holding her, but I didn’t act upon my instincts. I just smiled and continued walking with her.

I sat upon my bed and stared at my paper, wondering what I should write about but I gave up on that very soon. I tried studying my math book but I did not understand the equations or anything at all on the pages. Then my mother knocked on my door,
“What is it?”
I asked calmly,
“Karyn is here.”
I jumped up from my previous position on my stomach and ran over to the door. This was the first time ever that Karyn had been inside my house, there was nothing wrong with my house at all, my mother was a perfectionist and loved to keep things clean! I just felt odd to have someone I had already developed feeling for and our friendship has only been up to a year and a half, in my house. Karyn waved to my mom and stepped into my room,
“Trig was a little difficult for me to understand so…I came over to get some help from my best buddy.”

I smiled and pulled her in and sat beside her on my bed,
“I don’t get it either.”
I admitted to her and closed my textbook then I fell back onto my bed and felt the soft pillow catch my head.
“I’m so tired!”
I didn’t hear a reply from Karyn, I saw her move but thought nothing of it. Then I realized Karyn had relocated herself on the bed and was lying beside me,
“Laura…”
“Hmm?”
“I don’t know how to say this…”
I was confused,
“Well if it’s bad then don’t tell me…”
I said in a semi-sarcastic way, I didn’t know which way I wanted her to take it. I had an idea of what she was trying to tell me though, and I felt the same way, I just wasn’t sure.
