I Can See The Horizon by Jeny1288

I am a lesbian in love with a straight woman. Yeah, I know, dangerous ground. I just can’t help it. She has the best sense of humor, and she loves my jokes. I don’t get it either. She isn’t even my usual type. She is 5’11’’, fit, long brown hair, and she has a boyfriend.

Oh wait, I’m getting ahead of myself. My name is Alexandra Jones, but everyone calls me Alex. I am around 5’4’’, Caucasian, medium length brown hair, and fit. I go to UCSC (University of California in santa Cruz) where I am majoring in Piano (a instrument that I love) and in social work. I know, a double major is crazy, but I met this girl, whose name is Allison, my senior year of high school. We both ended up applying to the same schools and both got accepted to UCSC. I didn’t know what to do. So, like the ingenious person that I am, I decided to take a double major.

Allison is one of my good friends, but she doesn’t know that I’m gay. I could never tell her. What if I lost her? Sure, I’m miserable now, but not being able to see her everyday would send me into a depth of despair that if you are lucky enough to come out of, you are no longer a whole person, just an outside replica of your former self. I couldn’t and refuse to live without her.

When Allison and I found out that we were both going to the same college, she jumped up and down because we could be roommates. I pretended to be happy too, you know, putting on a big smile and saying how fun it would be. Later, at home, I cried myself to sleep. I just kept wondering why God had to punish me so. I didn’t want to see Allie bringing home boys and telling me all of her dirty gossip.

My mom drove me the two hundred miles from my hometown of Roseville, CA to my new school and home for the next nine months. My Mom is a strict Mormon, and even though I like the church and all, my sexual preference kept me from really getting into it. My mom doesn’t know I’m gay. She wouldn’t banish me to some remote island if she found out about me being gay, but she wouldn’t exactly think it was the best thing in the world. And sense my Mom didn’t want me to get in trouble with boys or anything; I had an all girl’s dorm room. Sure, it was nice for me and all, but if she didn’t want me to have sex, and coed dorm would probably have been better.

I got to my dorm building and searched my pack for the room number.

“Alex, it’s 211.” My mom was still trailing behind me, and was obviously more excited about this whole college thing then I was.

“Thanks.” I mumbled.

211 wasn’t very far down the hall, and when I got there, none of the beds had been taken. I picked the lower bunk in the larger room and went about unpacking my stuff. I took out my framed photo of my dog that I wouldn’t get to see since I had to stay at my mom’s, my toothbrush and other toiletries went in the bathroom, my computer went on the desk, and my sheets and blankets went on the bed. After that I went out to finish helping my mom with the car, and seeing her on her way.

“Alex! Stand in front of your door so I can take a picture. No! Move a little so I can see the number. Perfect. Say college!”

“Dumbege.” Yeah, I know cheesy, but I was not super excited about my mom being so embarrassing.

My mom was done with the camera, and we were at our van saying goodbye. “Honey, don’t get too stressed out over school. You’ll be fine. Besides, you have Allison so you won’t be too home sick. Love ya. Bye honey.”

She drove off. “Bye Mom.” I said. “I’m sorry.” She didn’t here me. She was already gone.

I was almost done unpacking my stuff when one of my roommates showed up. I heard her coming in so I went to say hi.

Oh my God! It was Allison. She looked so good. She was wearing a tank top and some jean shorts. She looked so good! Her hair was pulled back into a messy bun, and she had some designer sunglasses perched on her nose.

“Alex, hell ya! We have to have a party. I know. Let’s do a beach theme. I just meant a senior outside who is totally hot, and I know he’ll bring beer if I ask.”

“Hey.” Does my voice sound hoarse? “Let’s get you settled before we get kicked out”

“Okay.” She walked to the room I had just come from and started putting her stuff on the top bunk. Things could have been worse. She was going to sleep in the same room with me, and have sex with guys near me. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it.

“Hey, I’m going to pack the fridge. Did you bring any perishables?”

“Yeah, just hold on a sec. Let me look.”

She started rummage around in her bag, throwing thongs onto my bed since it was the closest thing besides the floor, then bras, and pajamas. Would it ever end? Finally, after talking out her many number of perfumes and lotions, she found a bottle of vodka.

“Where’d you get that?” But I already knew the answer.

“My dad has a stash. You know, we used to drink his stuff all of the time.”

“Oh yeah.” I reached out for the bottle and instead she handed me her hand to help her up.

“Alex. Is something wrong?”

Shit. Did she know? Could she tell? “No.” Maybe I said that a little too quickly.

She gave me a look that said she knew better. She looked like she was about to say something, then thought better of it, and handed me the vodka.

It is 8 o’clock on the first day still, but my other two roommates are here. One is named Jessica. She has bright red hair that is cut short like Halley Berry short, and she is black. She got here and is the loudest most loud person I have ever known. Not loud as in noisy, but loud as in vibrant. I like her already. The other person that will be sharing this little dorm room with us is Kelly. Kelly is 17, and got early acceptance. She is a major bookworm. She has blond hair that she parts in the middle. No bangs or layers to accentuate it, but it looks good on her. Her and Jessica share the room next to Allison and Me.

I am kind of hungry, so I decide to take everyone’s orders and go to the little chinese food place I saw down the street earlier.

I had gotten Jessica and Kelly’s orders when I went to ask Allison what she wanted.

“Hey, Allie, still unpacking?”

She was on her knees still trying to get the room to feel like home. “Yep. I should be done soon though.”

“Well, I’m going to get some Chinese. What do you want?”

“Wait just a minute and I’ll go with you.”

“No, it’s cool. I don’t mind.”

“Hey. It’s getting dark and I am not letting my best friend walk by herself.”

Crap. Not again. I was hoping to talk some sense into my self during my little stroll to the restaurant, but now I couldn’t. I have to get over her. She isn’t good for me.

“Okay. I’ll wait in the common room.”

I walked out into the hall. I glanced into the other bedroom. Kelly and Jessica were talking and it looked like they would be good friends in spite of all their differences.
